Co. Cashel, Ireland

Rock of Cashel

History

Rock of Cashel is simply amazing. Situated high on a limestone hill, you can see for miles in every direction. In comparison to other castles, it’s massive. In it’s heyday, it must’ve been totally fucking awesome!

The oldest building on site dates back to ~1100 AD but the location is significant in that St. Patrick himself converted King Aenghus to Christianity sometime in the 5th century.

Make sure to check out Cormac’s Chapel while you’re there. Off to the side of the main buildings, it’s easy to miss. The chapel dates back to the 12th century containing an intricately carved sarcophagus and the only surviving Romanesque frescoes in Ireland. Cormac’s Chapel can only be seen on tour. Tickets are limited and must be bought on site.
