CORDOBA

Mezquita

What started out as a basilica in the 6th century eventually developed over many hundreds of years into an enormous mosque, of which was torn apart from the center to make room for a Catholic chapel in 1236. As time went on new altars were built and architectural changes were made to wipe out the old Moorish aesthetics. Surprisingly much of the perimeter of the mosque was left untouched, most importantly the many rows of terracotta double arches and some of the prayer naves.
