Cordoba
Once a hustling bustling city, Cordoba is now a somewhat forgotten town on the stretch of road between Granada and Seville. But Cordoba is an ancient place that’s all about quality over quantity. Make a day to stop and see the famous Mezquita, the royal palace, and the Roman bridge. Don’t forget a day trip to Medina Azahara if long lost cities is your thing.
THE BITTER BITCH’S GUIDE
Cordoba is a beautiful little town I stopped by on my way to Seville. It can be comfortably done in one day as it is much smaller in size than Granada, but I encourage you to stay the night so that you can take a morning tour to the Medina Azahara.
The big draw to Cordoba for me was the Mezquita. Originally a monumental mosque, it was all but razed to the ground to make way for a Catholic Church. The basilica dates back to the mid 6th century and went through many phases of building and destruction. Not gonna lie, I cried a little bit. It is truly overwhelming to imagine what it once looked like and to see what it has become. You can buy same day tickets but beware that it closes for a span midday, and they mean closed, as in get the fuck out.
The Alcazar is just a few blocks away, but you have to be sure to buy those tickets at least one day in advance. Coming from Granada, everything paled in comparison, but that doesn’t mean you should skip it. When in Rome! And speaking of Rome, just across the road is the Puente Romana, a 2000 year old bridge still in use today. It’s definitely worth a visit. From the other side, you can view the entire city, and it is spectacular.
